How Long Do Withdrawal Symptoms Of THC Sustain?

Posted on Tue, 25 Jan 2022
Question: Just to give y’all some context I was introduced to weed at the age of 17 smoking very, very occasionally with friends and eventually (not that long of a period) quit smoking because of the negative stigma. Once I turned 20 I moved into my own place and started smoking again out of boredom. This started to happen every day and while I wasn’t smoking large amounts (just a puff here and there to keep the high) it was pretty consistent. I was in school and noticed my grades started dipping so I quit smoking all day (which was followed by light irritation which eventually passed) and just smoked at night as a way to wind down similar to how some people like to have a few beers after getting off a long shift but still on a daily basis. This has been going on for the last 11–12 months, and now the school year is over and I’m back living in my parents house and working trying to make as much money as I can over the summer. When I returned I started catching myself in the same habit of sneaking into the backyard at night to take a puff to wind down and go to sleep and realized I have a habit which I would rather not carry. Long story short I through all me weed and pipe away 9 days ago without hesitation and have been going through withdraw symptoms. First they started out as nausea and upset stomach (puking and diarrhea) and it didn’t help that my friend had given my the stomach flu the day before I through everything away. While this stopped I have been going through daily mood swings. I will feel like my normal self, experience a weird euphoria, and then become sad and sometimes a light feeling of anxiety. Not always in this order. I have always been a very happy positive minded person so these new feelings of occasional sadness are very uncomfortable for me but I know it is just my brain rewiring and getting used to not having any THC in my system. My question is for someone with similar use to mine, how long does this typically last until these mood swings end so I can just be my normal happy self again. On another not I have not been very agitated and have not had trouble falling asleep although I have not really felt well rested causing daytime tiredness.

Brief Answer:
The mild symptoms will go in a couple of weeks.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

First of all, I'd like to tell you that as such weed or cannabis use don't cause proper physical dependence. Most of the withdrawal symptoms occur due to psychological dependence. Mild symptoms like worsening of mood, irritability, mood swings etc can be seen but these symptoms usually go by own in around a couple of weeks.

So please don't get distressed. The symptoms will go in coming days. You haven't developed any serious physical dependence. The sadness will go in some days. Spend more time in outdoors or in doing strenuous exercise. This will help in secretion of endorphins which will lift your mood.

Thanks and Take care

So the occasional sadness/depressive states are normal? As mentioned I have never experienced anything like this other than general sadness or irritability, but it is very frustrating how these current emotions come and go seemingly whenever they feel like it. The only thing that helps is really just reminding myself that these are natural withdrawals and my brain is essentially “healing”. The other symptoms I have endured were nowhere near as intense.

As well I hope I have given you enough background information in my original message to properly respond. Do you think any of this has to do with my habits changing I.e, moving back in with my parents while school is out?

Sorry for flooding you with questions but you are the only credible source I have been able to discuss this with considering I cannot personally afford to go see a doctor in person at the moment, not necessarily thinking I need to do so, but is there a general timeline regarding the withdrawal symptoms fading or does it vary person to person?

Thank you.

Brief Answer:
The symptoms will go in some days.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Weed or cannabis makes a person high and in few individuals it result in apathy or state of amotivation. But these symptoms are seen after chronic long duration of use. You haven’t used weed for long so no need to get worried for this state.

You moved from school to parents place. Change is place could be one environmental factor for behavioral change. So combination of psychological withdrawal symptoms and shift of place both are contributing to these symptoms. But as I said in last reply, these symptoms are not very permanent and will go in some days. You just have to keep yourself busy. Avoid remaining confined to your room only. Exercise, good healthy food, meditation will contribute to early recovery.

I am sorry for replying late as I was traveling.

Thanks

It is okay, thank you for your response. I have noticed that either following or right after the depressive states of the mood swings I have experienced aenxiety attacks. While this is a common side effect of smoking it has never been something I experienced before using marijuana. Reading online I saw that this was another wothdrawl symptom that goes hand in hand with the depressive states. As mentioned before these two symptoms are the ones that trouble me the most so I guess my question is whether or not the aenxiety passes around the same time frame as the other symptoms or if this lingers? I am currently on my 11th day after dropping marijuana and although it is still early and have not had symptoms yet today, but yesterday, although it was short, I noticed a particularly bad aenxity attack while at a Major League Baseball game.

Brief Answer:
Anxiety will also go away.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

First of all, please keep one thing in mind that these symptoms are not at all permanent.

Psychological withdrawal is resulting in the trigger which is resulting in worsening of mood and also in anxiety. You need to learn to ignore these symptoms. We usually don’t see marijuana or cannabis withdrawal with such symptoms.

These symptoms could be part of independent anxiety and mild mood worsening. The symptoms of anxiety will also go with time. No need to get worried.

Thanks
