How Long Does Methylcobalamin Shots Stay In System?

default
Posted on Fri, 19 Dec 2014
Question: I was giving myself methylcobalamin shots for one year. My MD Rxd due to neurological exam without testing.
After one year, an MD tested and it was >2000.
I decided to stop recently wondering if it was doing any good and wanted a base line.
I stopped shots 5 weeks ago, and was tested 3 days ago. The results were the same >2000.
Should I have waited longer? How long does it take to clear?

Brief Answer:
No known level of B 12 toxicity has been determined, Repeat after 6 months

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Normal reference range of vitamin B12 is 180-914 ng/L or 150-900 pg/mL, so your levels are high but that is not a matter of concern as there is no known toxic level of vitamin B12.

There are many concerns about a greater cell turnover and a greater potential risk for cancer but none of these arguments have any research based evidence behind them.

The half life of vitamin B 12 is approximately 6 days i.e would require 6 days for half of vitamin B 12 to be excreted/ cleared from the body in case its not stored, in addition many of the foods that we commonly consume contains vitamin B 12. Its good that you have stopped the injections and I would recommend you re check the levels for the purpose of monitoring in 6 months time as 5 weeks is quite early.

Thank you for the info about half-life of b12.

I know that high b12 is not toxic, but have head that it's sometimes high with some kinds of cancer.

My mother was very tired before being diagnosed with stomach cancer. Because she had pernicious anemia, we were hoping that the fatigue was due to low b12 and a shot would help.

I don't have the PA and not at all concerned about stomach cance, but have been remembering that her level was high, but don't remember if it was abnormally high.

I'm not worried about this and believe my level will go down with time. I'll ask to be retested in a few months.

Thanks

Brief Answer:
You are welcome, correlation and causation arent the same.

Detailed Answer:
hello again,

There is no causative relation between stomach carcinoma and high b 12. Correlation of high B 12 levels is different from causation. The fact that B 12 was supplemented further becomes evidence in favor of B 12 not being responsible for triggering or causing such events.

Hope I have answered your query.
