How Long Does Immunity Last After Receiving Rabies Vaccination?

Posted on Tue, 8 Aug 2017
Question: Hi,

I was volunteering at an animal shelter in XXXXXXX Bulgaria and my friend said they get rabies vaccine but there are so many dogs not sure if it's current. I would hope so since they are able to be adopted. I was giving one a treat and his nails scratched my arm but I didn't bleed and I did wash it with soap and water right away. Today 2 of the scratch marks are gone and the 3rd is like 90% gone. Should I go and get the rabbies vaccine when I get home or should I be ok?

Brief Answer:
I suggest to get the rabbies vaccine as soon as possible.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you writing in healthcaremagic.

Based on your history, being not sure of the dog vaccination even if you didn't bleed I suggest to do an postexposure treatment for rabies just as a precautions.
Treatment after an exposure in a previously unvaccinated person requires receiving a dose of rabies immune globulin and four doses of vaccine, and if you have done a rabies vaccination before it is recommended to receive two more doses of rabies vaccine ( one dose immediately and one three days later).

I hope my answer helps you.
Regards.

Hello,

I received the rabies vaccine when I was 6 or 8 because of a raccoon bite. Is the post exposure treatment still as many shots? Also I'm heading back to the USA on Wednesday and would prefer to go back in the states where I have insurance and also because the healthcare here is not the greatest. Do I have enough time to wait till I get back in the USA?
