Question: How long does it take to form a kidney stone? a year back had passed 9mm stone drinking as much water possible. Again now I was told mild hydroureteronephrosis due to upper ureteric calculus 11mm about 3cm from right PUJ. Will it pass again with high fluid intake. The first question asked because I stayed in hotel in pondicherry were water was very salty however used for bathing and brushing teeth and after four days of stay in that hotel fifth day I rushed to hospital for sever back pain. I.e., last year also I stayed in the same hotel 9mm stone and this year also with 11mm stone. Basically I was from bengaluru and I had never come across with back pain ever before. Please tell me whether will take few days to form a kidney stone ? Please

Brief Answer:
Stone formation is very slow process .

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for your query ,based on the facts that you have posted it appears that you have recurrent urinary stone .

Formation of urinary stone is very slow process It takes months together to form a stone of a size of 1 mm.

Pain in kidney stone disease is not due to stone per se but it is the obstruction of the stone in collecting system (Calyces ) and draining system (Ureter) which causes accumulation of the urine proximal to site of obstruction and distention of the calyces or ureter that gives rise to severe back pain .

The pain that you got in the same hotel is a coincidence .Stone which was already there in your kidney got impacted in upper ureter that happened in Pandechary causing hydronephrosis giving rise to pain .

You need to investigate the metabolic disorder that is causing stone formation repeatedly .

Consult qualified Urologist for clinical evaluation and investigations to trace out the reason for recurrence of urinary stone .

Hope I have answered your query ,please feel free to ask if you have more questions , I shall be happy to help you .
Thanks and Regards.
