Brief Answer:
Some portion comes out right away, some stays there and have two fates.

Detailed Answer:
Dr. Hanif warmly Welcomes you!

Thanks for consulting at my virtual clinic. I have carefully worked through your case, and I can realize your health worries. Being your physician, I assure you not to worry as I will take care all of your medical concerns.

After ejaculation, the glands and muscles of the penis contract and most of the seminal fluid left over after the full blown ejaculation is squeezed out of the penile urethra.

Left over is very little (almost negligible) and gets flushed by the next urinary flow. So the urethra is perfectly cleared off of semen or sperms.

Negligible volume is left over in the genital tract only. It stays there and there are two school of thoughts for that:

1. It liquefies there and is destroyed by macrophages and other engulfing mechanisms in the body.
2. It stays there and if there are any sperms in it, it may stay alive. And with next sexual act it comes out mixed in the pre-ejaculate (the transparent and sticky fluid that is the secretion of the glands). That's why some experts suggest that the pre-ejaculate may also cause conception if there are sperms in it. Those sperms may be from the previous ejaculate left-overs or may that be de-novo (altogether newly made) with the new sexual act.

I always suggest my patients to get enough water before and after sexual act that they must have a need for the urination just after the sexual intercourse so that the urethra is totally cleaned with the gush of urine flow.

Hope I answered all of your health concerns . If you have further questions, feel free to contact me anytime. Always write my name in start of your question in future, and I will get back to you in no time. If satisfied, please give a five Star rating and don't forget to Close the discussion.

Okay thank you doc very descriptive. But how long does the sperm live in the urethra? And how often does the average man pee?

Brief Answer:
It is all relative and has different opinions as explained below.

Detailed Answer:
Dr. Hanif warmly Welcomes you!

Thanks for the follow up and you are always welcomed. I appreciate your compliments.

An average person with a good kidney functions may pee 650-2900ml of urine per day. We need to pee as our bladder fills upto 250ml and we can resist upto 500ml of the filling capacity on an average.

So, an average man if voiding a urine of an average of 400ml per episode may urine 2-7 times a day depending on the state of hydration of the body, his physical activity, outside temperature and humidity level etc. It has a wide range of distribution infact.

When sperms stay in urethra, they live there uptil the next urination cycle. It depends on an individual when he pees. A person on an empty bladder will definitely pee late after ejaculation and the one having almost filled up bladder may need to pee right away.

Sperms when comes out of the testes, they may remain alive only for upto a maximum of 72 hours if they remain at 35-37 degrees (i.e inside the female genital tract). Some believe that leftover sperms may remain alive in male genital tract also for upto the same 72 hours if the temperature remains the same.

If they remain outside the human body, below the said temperature (e.g. at a room temperature) they get destroyed after no time.
