How Long Does The Oil From Poison Ivy Remain In The System?

default
Posted on Fri, 7 Aug 2015
Question: How long does the oil from poison ivy last on ur body? I get that it soaks up in 15 minutes but how many days will the oil be there? Will the oil be gone and leave just a rash? I have noticed my poison ivy 6 days ago, I saw my doctor yesterday and he gave me the steroids to help with the itch. My rash is the back of my thigh, part of it is where your butt meets your thigh. Also should I continue to wrap up my leg for work and for a trip I am going on?

Brief Answer:
oil on skin

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
The oil can stay on your skin for several days if it is not washed. If you wash the area with soap thoroughly then you can remove the oil from your skin. That will not necessarily prevent the skin reaction. As you know the oil can soak into your skin in 15 minutes and cause the skin reaction of the rash.
Wrapping up your leg is not necessary unless it makes you more comfortable. You can not spread the rash from the fluid that comes out of the blisters.
Let me know if you have further questions.

Dr. Robinson
