Brief Answer:
Pubic hair appear between 10-14 years in boys

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to healthcaremagic

I am Dr. Kakkar. I have gone through your concern and I have understood it.

First (and often transient) pubic hair may appear between ages 6-10 well preceding puberty (due to adrenal hormones).

During puberty, pubic hairs tends to occur earlier in girls than boys, as with most puberty stages and puberty as a whole. The average age for females varies between 10-13, and for males, about 10-14.

You must have already had pubic hairs when you were on anabolic steroids as part of normal pubertal growth.

Of course, it would be very hard for you to recapitulate at this age (31 yrs) as to when did you develop your first pubic hairs, but i was wondering why do you want to know about that after so many years?

Thanks Dr Kakkar,

I have another question . How many days of increased androgen levels must there be before vellus hair has visibly turned into terminal hair?

Also do male babies get terminal hair after being born as they also have high androgen levels for several months after being born ?

Thanks and Regards

Brief Answer:
Androgen influence on vellus hair

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

Under the influence of Androgenic Hormones, hair would grow as terminal hair, as soon as, it is exposed to the Androgenic Hormones, in adequate concentration and in constant supply. Pubic hair grows at a rate of just 0.2 mm/day. So, under the influence of hormones they would be noticeable at about a 3-4 weeks time (when they would be 4-6 mm OR 0.5 cm in lengths)

In normal circumstances in babies, lanugo hair is shed before birth and is replaced by vellus hair which is present at birth. Circulating androgens in maternal blood don't usually cause vellus hair to turn into terminal hairs because the levels of androgens rapidly decreases post delivery.

This should not be confused with Hypertrichosis, which is an abnormal amount of hair growth over the body. Hypertrichosis can be congenital (present at birth). In Hypertrichosis, the excess growth of hair occurs in areas of the skin with the exception of androgen-dependent hair of the pubic area, face, and axillary regions.

Thanks Dr Kakkar for your valued answers.

Im little unsure. Why in male foetus does androgen lead to genital development but no pubic hair yet in teenage years androgen leads to both genital development AND pubic hair?

Is it because androgen receptors were not present in hair follicles as a baby?

Brief Answer:
Organisational-activation therory of sex hormones

Detailed Answer:
Hi

The answer to this lies in: Organizing and Activating Functions of Hormones

Organizational effects act during development, often during critical period.

Such hormones affect the construction or fine-tuning of sex organs or neural circuits underlying behavioral capacities that will be needed in adulthood. Organizational effects are often under tight genetic control, and not subject to major influence by environment. Organizational effects are often irreversible.

e,g Sexual differentiation in mammals (typical pattern)--testosterone has organizing effect on development of male behavioral repertoire.

Hormones with activational effects exert their influence on already-developed nervous system. Such hormones function as gates or switches, they may turn on already developed neural circuits as they are needed OR they may suppress already developed neural circuits when not needed, or when operation of that circuit would be inappropriate. Activational effects are usually reversible. Activational effects are often triggered by cues from environment.

e,g Age-dependent behavioral development and secondary sexual development( e.g pubic hair) in humans.

Thank you for your valued answers.

Please help me with this query:

Suppose i had hairs that were just before sprouting out of skin, then i have steroid drugs circulating that day and by end of 24 hours growth (0.2mm) hair is now outside skin and just about visible. Does this mean my first androgenic hair was due to steroid drugs?

Brief Answer:
Androgen influence

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

As I mentioned before, under the influence of Androgenic Hormones, hair would grow as terminal hair, as soon as, it is exposed to the Androgenic Hormones, in "adequate concentration" and in "constant supply". Moreover, terminal hair would usually be shed upon the return of the hormones to the normal levels.

Moreover, I doubt that just 24 hours of anabolic steroids would produce a clinically appreciable change in the character of the pubic hair.

Thank you Dr Kakkar for all your valued advice.

Just one more general query about growth hormones and effect on growth internal organs.

At end of puberty GH declines, but suppose internal organs genetic size hasnt been reached yet....can the decreased GH levels still contribute to growth of internal organs, to ensure 'mature size' is acheived?

Thanks and wish you all the best

Brief Answer:
Growth Hormone and Genes

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

Let me explain you with an example e.g lets suppose we are talking about a muscle.

Genes, by themselves cannot dictate the growth of a muscle. The other crucial component in the formula is the environment (growth hormone in this pretext). Both of them, together define the final size. The genes impinge on the system, giving certain general signals for growth, but the environment determines the actual course of action.

To summarize: As an muscle grows, its genes interact with its environment (growth hormone in this pretext) at each moment of its life history. The interaction of genes and environment determines the final muscle size (mature size)

As men age, GH levels fall. During the same time span, muscle mass would decline.

Hope this answers your query
