Question : My heart was recently tested & everything was normal. I haven't exercised vigoriously for several years. However, I want to start a new exercise routine. I am 45 years of age and I am about 10-15 pounds overweight. I have some questions concerning exercise:

1. How much daily or weekly exercise should I participate in?

2. What symptoms should I watch for while exercising so I don't over exert or cause damage to the heart?

3. What types of exercise should I engage in?

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HMC!

Regarding your concern, I would explain that as all your cardiac performed tests have resulted normal, there are no limitations to physical activity for you.

This means that you can perform as much physical activity as you want.

I would recommend these types of physical activity:

- walking (4km day are recommended)
- aerobics which is very helpful in reducing your weight and cholesterol levels ( especially considering the fact that you are overweight)
- recreational sports
- Yoga.

I would not recommend weight lifting, as it can impose a big physical stress to your heart.

It is advisable to start gradually physical activity ( increasing every day in time and intensity).

Cardio- training with an escalating way would be another training program.

If you experience chest pain or shortness of breath, you should consult with your doctor for a cardiac stress test (if you have not already performed it).

Hope to have been helpful!

Feel free to ask me again whenever you need!

Kind regards,

Dr.Iliri
