Question: I have central and left posterior disk herniation at c6-c7 with caudal migration on the left side component, with resultant compression to the ventral thecal sac. I also have disc herniation at the c4-c5 and c5-c6 with neural forminal narrowing and ventral thecal sac compression in all areas. Exactly how serious of a matter is this. I have neck and arm pain and numbing in arms and fingers at rest.

Brief Answer:
This is not serious.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for posting your query.

I am Dr Sudhir Kumar, Neurologist, and I would try my best to help you.

I have noted your clinical and MRI details. Based on this, there is pinching of nerves in the cervical (neck) region at three levels. This is the cause of neck and arm pain.

In most people, surgery is not needed. Combination of medicines such as pregabalin capsules and physiotherapy works in about 70% of patients. Other 20% patients need epidural injection for pain relief. Only about 10% people do not get better with the above two approaches and end up requiring surgery.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,

Dr Sudhir Kumar MD (Internal Medicine), DM (Neurology)
