default
Posted on Tue, 28 Nov 2023
Question: Today my nose is dripping -- it's it's 'running like never before and i am at home and have no known illness.
It is annoying and causes some sneezes like 2 - time each. I tried a allergy relief nose spray 3 hrs. ago and it has no results.

Hello and welcome,

What you are experiencing, if you don't think you are coming down with a viral upper respiratory infection (i.e. a cold) is likely to be either from an allergy to something in the air, or vasomotor rhinitis - a runny nose from any number of triggers such as inhaled irritants or even hot soup.

I don't know what medicine was in your allergy relief nose spray (is that the fluticasone you listed?) but here are some things you can try:

1. The fluticasone is a good choice for stabilizing the nasal tissues. It is particularly good for stuffiness due to swollen inflamed tissues but can help for runny nose too. But it will take a few days of regular use to work. It does NOT work right away.

2. An oral antihistamine such as Zyrtec can help if the problem is due to allergies.

3. An oral decongestant such as pseudoephedrine can provide quick relief (in an hour or so). It is sold over the counter but you have to ask for it and provide your ID and signature because of it's abuse for cooking into meth. So for this reason you won't see it sitting on the shelf. Don't use it if you have high blood pressure or prostate problems.

4. Nasalcrom nasal spray. This is pricey, around $20, but it can work for allergies or rhinitis from other causes. It has pretty much no side effects. But you have to use it frequently. This is my go-to when my nose is out of control.

5. If this runny nose started after exposure to something that set it off, in the future, have nasal saline on hand such as Simply Saline Instant Relief (comes in a spray can) and irrigate your nose/sinuses as soon as you can after exposure to wash the culprit out.

I hope this information helps. Please let me know if I can provide further information.
