How Should Recurrent Blockage Of The Food Pipe Be Managed In A Parkinson's Disease Patient?
Question: Dear Sir, My Mother aged 74 yrs , she is suffering from food pipe it is getting blocked . She is a parkinsons patient and has been taking syndopa tablets since last ten years. there was an acute suspected COPD last sunday and she was provided treatment with all steroids. But no improvement was noticed . In last four days the problem has become acute and not able to even drink water . Therefore saline is being given . What are the solutions to treat it . I can understand your concern. These are serious concerns and as per your history, I think she is hospitalized. If not, kindly admit her to a hospital. As she has a suspected acute COPD and not able to drink water, so she requires continuous monitoring of vitals like pulse, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, respiratory rate and several other parameters under proper medical supervision.
Treatment mainly depends upon the underline condition. Along with steroids, IV fluids, she may require oxygen support, bronchodilators. She may require antibiotics if there is an underlying infection. Kindly consult with your doctor regarding the same.
I'd suggest you do Chest CT scan and upper GI Endoscopy after consultation to rule out any other pathologies. Kindly follow up if you have any query. Take care.

Thanks for your reply. My mother is hospitalized for the last 6 days now. She was in the ICU and now shifted to the ward. Her vitals are satisfactory and normal now with Saturation at 92, TC at 9500, BP at 130/92 and she doesn't have any fever. Her radiology report also indicates there is no congestion in her lungs. She is being fed through rice tube - the food being only protein supplements with milk. Her Parkinson's and antibiotic medications too are being powdered and fed through the same way along with milk. She is still unable to swallow even a drop of water. How to get this to a normal condition so that we can take her back home. She has lot of phlegm accumulated in her throat and is being removed by suction pumps, but still this phlegm accumulates regularly. I want your expert opinion and solution on making her drink/ swallow without the rice tube. I eagerly await your reply. My cell phone is +91-0000
