Question: I just hit my front tooth on a metal buckle that was tethered to a canopy on a boat..my tooth is really sore but no visible cracks or chips.. could I have fractured the tooth inside?? Can it disturb my nerve.. it went kind of numb first.. the feeling has come back but it is sore..what kind of damage could I have done??

Brief Answer:
Needs an x ray for confirmation.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

If there are no visible signs of fractures then there can be reversible damage to the tooth.

However there are still possibilities of root fracture or nerve damage.

You need to get an X-ray done to check for root fractures.

If the tooth become painful and discolored then is probably nerve injury and break of blood supply of the tooth.

For now you can take painkillers like Advil to reduce pain.
Also apply anti sensitivity toothpaste over the tooth.

Please let me know for more queries.

Can the tooth be sore from the hit for a few days without having any damage. How soon would you see discoloration?

Can you get a hard hit like that and sustain no damage?
Thanks so much!!!

Brief Answer:
Yes, it is possible.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Yes, it's possible that the tooth is sensitive or sore due to injury but still there is no fracture or nerve damage.
But if blow was severe then chances of fracture of tooth and nerve injury is high.

Discoloration can appear as early as 2-3 weeks approximately or can even take a longer time.
An X-ray can help in getting a better picture.

Thanks
