Question : I have a thyroid nodule that contains Hurthle cells. These cells have been determined to be 'suspicious' and a thyroidectomy is being recommended. How urgent is it that I get my thyroid removed?
Brief Answer:
Need to know the nodule size and chharacter
Detailed Answer:
Good day,
Noted your concern. Hurthle cells can be seen in benign or malignant nodules. It is very difficult to determine in a small specimen obtained from FNA sample. Hence in this scenario, especially if FNA has reported as suspicious, it is better to get the the thyroid removed. Urgency of the surgery is decided by the size and character of the nodule. Do yo have a copy of the ultrasound or MRI and the FNA report? Could you attach them ?
