How Soon Will I Be Able To Urinate On My Own Post Foley Catheter Removal?

default
Posted on Tue, 24 Feb 2015
Question: When Foley catheter is removed, how long will it take before I am able to urinate on my own. Also how much water should I drink, if I am not able to urinate. Will drinking more water cause my system to start working faster. Is there a problem for the bladder to send a signal to the brain that the bladder needs to empty because the catheter has been in place so long, the signal is not sent?

Brief Answer:
Drinking water helps. Urine will resume its flow itself.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking

I read your question and i understand your concern. Urination after foleys cather removal may be a problem at start but it is easily manageable with slight measures like clamping the catheter for a few hours before removing it. It re instates the bladder tone and make it contract to expel th eurine out of bladder.

Yes drinking plenty of water always help not only in initiating bladder contractions necessary for urination but also in getting rid of organism which may cause bladder infections and are most common in catheterizations.

if you still feel trouble. hold your breath as deep as possible and just let it come and wait for it. Try manual and rhythmic stroking of perineum and it will initiate the urination.

Most of the time issue resolves by these maneuvers. If not then intermittent self catheterization for a few times for full bladder and then getting it out on completion of urination helps. But it doesn't come to that most of the time and conservative measures help.

I hope it helps. take good care of yourself and dont forget to close the discussion please.
