default
Posted on Wed, 14 Oct 2015
Question: In general I am in good health. However, I have a concern about possible pre-diabetic condition. I recently received information from doctor that my sugar level was 6.7. He said I don't have diabetes yet, but I want to take every precaution to avoid this disease. I notice my urine has a lot of bulbs and I am concerned that this could be sign of a related problem that may affect my kidneys.

Brief Answer:
Can be prevented

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thanks for writing to HCM. Noted your concern.

May I have a few details. Your height, weight and if the sugar level that you mentioned was checked in the fasting state?

Well, I believe you referred to your urine having frothing (if that is what you meant). Yes. That could signify renal disease. Are you on medications for any other health condition?

If your fasting is more than 5.5 it could mean you have pre diabetes which warrants further evaluation with a 2 hr 75 gm glucose tolerance test and a Hba1c. You could also do a urine albumin-creatinine ratio to check if there are any signs of kidney disease which could result due to hypertension, diabetes or age. Please check a serum creatinine level as well.

I would be glad to help you with more details once you get back to me. Do not worry. Pre diabetes is a warning zone of sorts. It gives us the oppurtunity to prevent diabetes and it can be done with diet modification, weight loss and exercise.
Warm regards.

My height is 5'7, and I weigh 120lbs.
The 6.7 sugar level was in a fasting state.
I don't have any other health issues.
The only medication I take are daily vitamins (C, D, and flaxseed oil), plus a low dose 81 aspirin.
I have always been active and exercise, since I was younger.

Please do a gtt

Detailed Answer:
Hi again. Noted the contents.

Your bmi is well in the normal range and the fasting sugar is in the pre diabetic state. As per guidelines you need to do a hba1c test which is an average glucose of the preceding three months and a two hour 75 gm glucose tolerance test. Your plan will be based on that.

Since your lifestyle is good the options about medications also needs to be considered as inspite of a healthy lifestyle there is impairment in glucose metabolism.

Would you please consider doing those tests? I will be glad to review the results and we can surely make the right plan for you.

Warm regards.
