Posted on Thu, 6 Nov 2014
Question: I have a granddaughter, now in 2nd grade, will not write. She needs a friend, and instead of doing her work, gets up and goes to other children that are doing their work, and will hug, kiss, and I will be your best friend. She gets in trouble and is taken to the office to spend the rest of the day. She is not liked by her classmates. She hates to write or do math. She reads at a 4th or 5th grade level. Loves to read and was tested in first grade at a 4th grade level near the end of the year. She refused to take her IQ test in first grade and has refused to do any work since she started school in KDG.

Brief Answer:
would advise assessment for ADHD

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern for your grand daughter.

I read your history carefully, it seems that she is distracted easily by the stimuli in her environment.

The writing issue needs to be addressed , the eyesight and hearing should get checked and her previous writing samples should be saved to discuss with a child psychologist and psychiatrist to detect any abnormality.

Many children find writing difficult and hard, one has to inculcate certain stuff via motivation and activities. you may try a 15 minute daily quiz or writing duel with other family members involved to see if that could arouse her interest to write.

I would strongly advise you to consult a psychiatrist to assess her for ADHD ( Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). Inattention , hyperactivity and poor impulse control are cardinal features that warrants such a workup.

Thyroid levels should be checked and sleep abnormalities should also be looked for. A diet diary may also be kept to monitor if she is consuming anything out of the ordinary or in excess.
