How To Determine The Causes For Elevated Liver Enzymes?

default
Posted on Fri, 17 Jun 2016
Question: If both Minocyline and drinking alcohol above the recommended limits may cause slightly elevated liver enzymes, and a doctor tells you to stop both, how would the doctor determine which is the causing agent? I am a 49 year old active female. I am not over weight and with all the blood test, discovered I am anemic. I have low hemoglobin.

Brief Answer:
Upload the report.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for posting your query.

See there is difference in elevation in liver enzymes due to alcohol and due to drug induced elevation.

Kindly upload the report so that I can tell what is the cause of liver enzyme elevation.

Regards.

Brief Answer:
Its due to the drug.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

I went through your reports . See if the elevation is due to alcohol intake then SGOT ( AST ) will be greater than SGPT ( ALT ) but while in other condition it will be the other way .

So in your case it is due to the drug the enzymes are elevated and hence drug has to be stopped ( or even a reduced dose could have been given).

But stopping alcohol is also essential as it may cause or increase the elevation of enzymes independently.

Hope this information was useful to you.
Any clarification feel free to ask.

Regards.

Thank you, Doctor. You provided me with peace of mind. I am so relieved relieved, and I have stopped the drug. I learned so much about the liver and the effects of drugs and alcohol that I have stopped that for the time being as well. Thanks again.
