How To Determine The Conception Date?

default
Posted on Mon, 16 Mar 2015
Question: Confused by the conception dates we were given. My wife's conception date was first estimated as being November 4th based on her last menstrual cycle. We have had two ultrasounds since in which two different ultrasound techs estimated the conception date was 5 days earlier making it October 30th. Is it possible I am even the father since she was in a different state from October 26th to November 12th?

Brief Answer:
Calculation of date of conception is not always accurate

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please do not get concerned about the conception dates if they are appearing different in separate reports.

I do interpret ultrasound scans regularly and often we have confusion with dates as found on the ultrasound measurements and as derived from the last menstrual period as declared by the patient.

The date of conception is arrived at by estimations based on logical mathematical calculations and cannot be always accurate. For medical purposes, the date on the ultrasound report is accepted for timing delivery of the baby.

It is certainly possible that you are the father as calculations can always go wrong. A woman's ovary might release an egg a few days earlier or later than anticipated and this can lead to a pregnancy. In this situation the conception date shown by the machine or calculated by last menstrual period might be incorrect.

We can discuss the variations of date of conception in detail if you can tell me the first day of last menstrual period your wife had.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek
