How To Encourage Competitiveness And Positive Attitude In A Teenager?

default
Posted on Sat, 10 May 2014
Question: My son is a teenager and sports player. During the game, sometimes i notice that even the when the opponent player is right, he disagrees. I feel due to the urge of winning, he is not ready to accept the fact that he is loosing and the opponent is becoming a winner. How to explain him the fact that he should be willing to accept the loss and ready to fight for winning in the right way. Is there any training available for such teenagers where they are taught of being competitive and keep them positive ?. Please advise

Brief Answer: Allow him to play more, umpires, spend time with him Detailed Answer: Hi, I went through the query and appreciate your concern. No need to worry. Let him play more games and with umpires. During teenage due to compitations usually children wants to win each and every game and hence these behaviour. When he plays & watches more games this behaviour will be lost and he will accept loosing. These behaviour will be more when he plays with there own group where usually your son may be one of the prominent person. So with more games with different opponents and also with umpires he will learn to be sportive and accept loosing. You should appreciate his work during games and not only the final result. Aslo spend some time playing with him and in the mean time if you loose, teach / show him to accept loosing games. Special training (councelling) is required only if his behaviour with every one changes when he is losing or after loosing the game. Otherwise just teach him that winning and loosing are part of games and allow him to play more and more. Hope this information helps you.
