Question : Hi ,

My CRP is 8 and my esr is 60.
I am dead worried.

I have got tested for RA, urine , liver, kidney, pancreatic tests done. All are normal.

I have mucus in my nose and throat. But not sure if that is creating the levels high.

How to find the cause.

Thank you,

Brief Answer:
Hi,

Detailed Answer:
CRP & ESR are very non-specific test & both of these may increase in a no. of conditions which cause the inflammation in body due to infections, auto-immune diseases, malignancy or heart disease etc. Generally, more the increase in CRP & ESR , more is the inflammation in body. This inflammation , decreases as the CRP & ESR also decrease & come to normal once the inflammation subsides. Hence both CRP & ESR have more significance for evaluating the recovery process from inflammation rather than the diagnosis of disease.
In your case,CRP is only mildly raised, while ESR is moderately raised. Many a times, we can not detect a precise cause of raised CRP & ESR even after exhaustive investigations. In such cases, follow up by repeat testing is advised. Also, many a times even minor infections or allergies, which cause inflammation may give rise such type of raised values & may be present in your case also. Presence of mucus in nose & throat may be an indication of any inflammation due to infection or allergy & this may be a cause of this raise.
However,in severe cases, where CRP, is raised more than 10 to 15 or ESR >80-100, every effort should be done to find a cause,if possible & treatment done accordingly.
