How To Identify If Baby Has Produced Meconium In The Womb?

default
Posted on Fri, 2 May 2014
Question: Hi, I have heard that baby may produce meconium in the womb and it is a dangerous situation, if the baby happens to swallow it. How can we know that , whether the baby has produced it? Also when to go to hospital? Another query is that, I have heard that there is a possibility that the umbilical cord may get around the baby's neck. In this situation also, how can we identify? Currently I am 34 weeks pregnant and my next scan is scheduled on 36 weeks. I am having great pressure and pain in my hips, lower back and waist at times. Is it normal? How can I distinguish this from the preterm labour pain? My hospital is 45 minutes away from my home. So, what all precautions should I take?I am really scared about this preterm labour. Please help! XXXX

Brief Answer: ultrasound and doppler can help Detailed Answer: Hello XXXX thank you for trusting health care magic. Meconium is basically fecal contents of baby which are usually contained there only till delivery but if there is any kind of distress in baby it can relax anus of baby and meconium comes out. Meconium passage is an emergency situation and immediate cesarean is required. But you cannot predict till waters rupture. So only precaution is reaching hospital as soon as you start getting labour pains or waters rupture. Cord around neck can be confirmed by fetal Doppler along with regular ultrasound around 36 weeks. The pain and pressure in buttocks is common as baby descends down and grows in last month of pregnancy Real PRETERM PAINS are intermittent in nature and increase steadily in duration and intensity. So visit your gynecologist or ER as soon as your waters break or in case intermittent pains starts. Wish you best of everything, and you can consult me whenever you have any query.
