How To Increase Weight Of A New Born Infant?

Posted on Mon, 2 Mar 2015
Question: I have 15 days premature girl baby. I started with Dexolac special care. When she completed 3 months she started refusing bottles. I thought she didn't like the taste. Then I consulted my OB/Gyn, she advised stage 1 formula in Lactogen. Since I wanted to give my baby the bet one, I started feeding her Nan 1 which is the only firmula available in my area other than lactogen and dexolac. She seems to like it better than Dexolac ( still she refuses at times).

She is drinking this Nan for past 1 week. But I feel that she looks thinner now. Shall I give her Pre Nan formula or Dexolac special care?!! Or should I continue with Nan 1?! Please advise!!

Brief Answer:
Continue giving the same feed

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to Healthcaremagic
Greetings of the day

Dear XXXX

As she is accepting Nan 1 , I would suggest you to continue giving her the same feed. During your next visit to Pediatrician you can measure her weight which will help in assessment of her growth.
Babies usually loose 10 percent of body weight during first 10 to 15 days of life after which they tend to put on weight. I would also recommend to initiate and maintain breast feeding which will help in adequate growth.

Thanks for your quick response. She is 5.1kg right now. How long should I feed special care or Premie formula generally?!

Brief Answer:
No special formulation required

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Dear Ms

Weight of 5.1 kg is normal for 3 months old baby. You ca. Start weaning diet by 6 months of age. Apart from nan 1 or breast milk , no other special formulation is required.

Wishing you happy motherhood

Thank you Doctor!

Could you suggest what I should do when she refuses bottle?!

I do breastfeed; since it's not enough my OBGYN advised formula feed.. It was going fine but she started refusing bottles at times.

Does it mean that she is not hungry?! I'm doing bottle feed when she is half-sleep..

Because when she is active she doesn't drink..

Please advise!!

Brief Answer:
You can use watti and spoon feed

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX

Sometimes babies do refuse bottle feeds, at that time you can feed them using watti and spoon or paladay.

Adequecy of feeds can be inferred from following observations

1. Baby sleeps well after feeds

2. urine output of baby is adequate

3. Baby is playful and joyful

Take care

Best regards
