How To Know If Vaginal Bleeding Was A Miscarriage Or Implantation Bleeding?

Question: Hi, I've been trying for a baby for the couple of months. Last month, we used an ovulation test to work out our best chance of having a baby. We tried on the day before and on the day of ovulation. I had what I think could be implantation bleeding about 10 days later (it lasted for 4 days in total and very light brown bleeding, not at all like a period). Two days after it stopped, I got a period. It was extremely heavy for the first day, then much lighter on the 2nd day and hardly anything at all on days 3 to 6. I wasn't due on for another two days when the period did start and I'm always very consistent in my timing of 35 day cycles from start to finish, so I'm never early. Do you think that it was implantation bleeding and if so did I lose the baby as I had a period? I had symptoms which suggested pregnancy for almost a week before the implantation bleeding started. These included extreme tiredness, slight nausea, a constant need to wee, back ache, cramps in my lower stomach and occasional dizziness. Since the period happened, I've now had my next ovulation date (that was on 28.03.14.) and we made love on that day, in the hope of trying again, in case it went wrong last time. But since 29.03.14. I've had really bad wind, I've been passing up to 5 stools a day (1-2 a day is normal for me), I've got white specks in my wee sometimes, I've been quite tired on some days and I've had some slight bout of nausea on some days. I haven't had any more back ache though and I'm not weeing as much as I was. I wondered if you know what's going on please? Pregnancy tests I've bought are coming up negative. I'm just on very mild anti-depressants, but the lowest the Doctor can give me and I've been on them for 18 months. I haven't taken the contraception pill for about 4 years and the only other thing I'm taking is Seven Sea's pre-natal vitamins.

Brief Answer: EXPLAINED BELOW Detailed Answer: Hello Thanks for writing to us with your health concern. Last time around, there is no way of knowing now if you had a miscarriage. Probably an ultrasound scan or a pregnancy test done concurrently with the bleed ( that we assume is a period ) could have established a definitive diagnosis. In absence of that, there is no conclusive way to know. This time around, it is too early to take a pregnancy test. If you ovulated on the 28th of March, the earliest you would know for sure is by the 11th of April, maybe even 4 - 5 days after that, since you have a 35 day cycle. The flatulence and the motions can be a mild bowel infection, so stick to bland plain home cooked food, lots of water and curd / yoghurt. Are you having any loose motions ? The symptoms are not specific for an early pregnancy. They can indicate a mild bowel infection or pre menstrual symptoms also. I would request you to wait for a week more and then take a pregnancy test. Antidepressants also can sometimes lead to menstrual imbalance. If possible, avoid them while trying to conceive. All the best PLease feel free to discuss further.
