Posted on Mon, 28 Apr 2014
Question: Hi, I am obese, with a weight of 89 kg on my 5 foot 3 inches frame, I have tried nearly everything to loose weight. I am hypothyroid and diabetic and have been on thyronorm and glyciphage for 2 years and 3 months respectively. My values are normal now, however I can't loose weight. The doc has suggested taking tab. checkwt for a period of 1 month which is not available in India...Now I am at wits end. Plz suggest any other medication that can be taken. Also I have tried reshape earlier but only took it once a day. I want to know if metformin is better to help me loose weight...Don't tell me medication is not the right choice because I am unable to loose by exercising too..I walk an hour and do sun salutation for 15 min a day!!!

Brief answer....given below Detailed answer... Hello, Thanks for the query. I can understand your problem and feel that you are really very interested in reducing your weight. There are definitely some medicines avaible meant for weightloss but these medicines are prescription medicines and have their share of side effects also. These medicines don't suit everybody and the problem with these medicines is that the moment these medicines are stopped, weight comes back unless and until necessary diet changes, regular exercises and lifestyle changes are also incorporated in the medication schedule. These medicines are ORLISTAT,LORCASERIN etc. If you rely totally on medicines, then it wont prove successful. Since you are diabetic and hypothyroid also,it becomes very important for you to consult a endocrinologist and take weight reducing medicines under his guidance. Along with this you should take the help of a dietician for necessary changes in your diet and also use the services of a physical trainer so as to do your exercises properly under his guidance. I know you might feel it little complex, but had it been easy, you could have done it yourself. Think rationally and go ahead with positive frame. You should definitely get successful. I hope it helps, however you may revert to me for any further medicines. Best of luck Thanks

thank you for the response.....but I was prescribed tab. checkwt by my gyenic...the prob is tat it is not available...is orlistat as gud as checkwt cause I have researched and understand the content in checkwt is very similar to orlistat....can I take xenical or others such as reshape and many others tat contain orlistat. I assure tat I have made a lot of other lifestyle modifications ...I walk I exercise and also eat around 1200 calories a day ....I know cause I have studied to be a dietitian...old advice according...the gynecologist says if the tablet checkwt doesn't work then I only have d option to undergo bariatric surgery....

Hello, XENICAL AND RESHAPE have ORLISTAT in them and are one and same thing. I do agree that you are trying your best to reduce your weight but it would be very good if you could give a serious try to reduce your weight by opting proper professional advice as I suggested in my earlier reply. Although BARIATRIC surgery is a good option for weight reduction but it is also not free of complications and side effects. Your BMI is 36 and hence you can be candidate of BARIATRIC surgery because you are having diabetes also in addition, but before opting for surgery, give a serious try to reduce your weight under professional guidance. Thanks
