Posted on Mon, 30 Jun 2014
Question: I am a type 2 diabetic on a daily regime of insulin, 3 times daily.
I have noticed that it is almost impossible to lose weight and I have been told that the insulin, metformin tablets are responsible for this. Thus taking a strict diet would affect my blood sugar as well as my health.
I wish to lose weight but it is v difficult as the weight that carry, obese, precludes active exercise.
Whats to do?

Brief Answer:
Insulin promotes weight gain

Detailed Answer:
Dear madam I can understand your concern.
insulin is a very good drug in diabetes but the only side effect is weight gain.
you said that you are taking three shots of insulin and metformin.metformin will helps you to stabilize your weight and in some cases it can cause weight loss also.
taking three shots of insulin will give you very tight diabetes control,But considering age as a factor tight diabetes control is not advisable as it increases rate of hypoglycemia and weight gain.
kindly consider taking insulins like Lantus and levimer which acts for 24 hrs. This kind of medications are associated with very little weight gain than regular insulins. XXXXXXX diet is not suggested at your age since the high protein content is not good for kidney function.
consider doing mild exercise.
kindly discuss with your doctor regarding usage of new types of insulin.
if possible kindly provide me with details like your height, weight, type of insulin using and number of units taken, latest hba1c level, any low sugars(if so how many per day).....to assist you better.
hope I was able to help you.i am ready for further discussion.
