Brief Answer:
Intestinal dysbacteriosis due to antibiotic use...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have gone through your medical history and understood your concerns carefully.

I understand that you are worried about your actual health problems, however, I highly advise to calm down. Stress will not help overpass your actual health problems.

Now, from what you are describing, I do not think the symptoms you are experiencing are due to infection, but to intestinal dysbacteriosis due to antibiotic use (Augmentin).

I advise to:
- start taking probiotic to optimize intestinal flora
- culture the feces for candida infection. If the result is positive, can start anti-fungal therapy too.
- should increase water/fluids intake

You can discuss these options with your doctor.

Wish fast recovery!

The CT (with contrast) can during my second ER visit showed inflamation in the same area which is why they kept me in the hospital on IV antibiotics for 3 days. I am on a probiotic as well. The gasternolgist felt the first infection did not clear up. I guess I wanted to know if, since the pain is gone, is it a good sign that the infection is resolved? I see the do@ in two weeks and I will ask for the candida test - would this cause inflamtion in the colon that mimics diviticulitis?

Brief Answer:
Yes,candida infection can mimic diverticulitis

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

Diverticulitis is characterized by flare ups and clear up periods. At the moment, you are having acute episode of the infection that needs some time to get resolved.

It is great that the pain is gone. This means that treatment is giving its effects. However, one course of antibiotic is not enough. You might need to use antibiotics for longer time.

Yes, candida infection can also give the same clinic as the diverticulitis (regarding the pain and discomfort); that's why, testing and proper treatment is needed.

For the moment, just go ahead and continue medications as prescribed by your doctor. When you meet her/him after 2 weeks, can discuss about the culture of feces and to start Metronidazole therapy.

It is good that you are also taking probiotics. Once again, it is important to consume large amounts of water and take medications exactly as directed by your doctor.

Wish fast recovery!
