Question: hi, My name is XXXXXXX I am facing dandruff issues from the past 10 years. I underwent a lot of treatments and even applied tugain lotion into my scalp for the regrowth of my hair but instead in addition to dandruff i lost a lot of hair. Recently i consulted another doc who suggested my "Follihair". So my question is whether follihair is helpful and whats the ultimate cure for dandruff??? Please reply

Brief Answer: Topical steroid lotion+antidandruff shampoo Detailed Answer: Hello and welcome to healthcaremagic I am Dr, Kakkar. I have gone through your concern and I have understood it. Dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis is an important cause of increased hair shedding. Dandruff is bound to recur again, therefore people with dandruff should use an antidandruff shampoo rather than using a regular shampoo, to keep the dandruff under check. If I was your treating doctor I would have asked you to use an antidandruff lotion/shampoo. My choice is 2% ketoconazole shampoo, thrice weekly for 2-4 weeks followed by once or twice weekly for maintenance. It is available OTC. Sometimes this alone seems insufficient. In that case your dermatologist might prescribe you a topical steroid lotion(clobetasol or mometasone lotion), to be applied twice daily for 2 weeks. The topical steroid lotion can be stopped once the dandruff is well controlled and thereafter the improvement can be sustained with just an antidandruff lotion/shampoo. Tugain lotion contains minoxidil in an alcohol base, and even though minoxidil is a non-specific hair growth promoter, it rarely works in hair shedding related to dandruff and moreover because it is available in an alcoholic base, it in turn causes scalp dryness and scaling, thereby exacerbating the problem further, as has happened in your case. Follihair (a biotin supplement) similarly is unlikely to be beneficial in your case because the underlying cause in your case is dandruff and not Biotin deficiency. Therefore, if I was the treating doctor I would have suggested you to use a topical steroid lotion (clobetasol or mometasone lotion) for faster relief from dandruff and resultant hair fall. The remarkable improvement that would be achieved with topical potent steroid lotion can be sustained/maintained by using an antidandruff shampoo, twice or once weekly, regularly. regards

Thank you for the reply ....but i have one more question to ask, the doctor who prescribed me follihair for hair regrowth also prescribed me 8x shampoo and non skurf lotion for dandruff control which i forgot to mention in the earlier message. Can you please tell me whether this shampoo and lotion would be helpful. And i even read the side effects of 8x shampoo in which one of the effect was increase in hair fall in order to prevent dandruff. Can you please guide me and also prescribe me a medicine for hair regrowth ? and tell me whether i should continue with 8x shampoo and non-skurf lotion.

Brief Answer: hair fall treatment Detailed Answer: Hi. Noskurf lotion is a combination of climbazole+piroctone olamine. Since it is an overnight leave on preparation, therefore it is more effective for dandruff control than a shampoo because the contact time is long(overnight). You can continue with it, twice weekly 8X shampoo contains Ciclopirox olamine and is also an antidandruff shampoo. It does'nt increase hair fall as a side effect of using it for dandruff control. It may also be continued, twice weekly. Controlling dandruff would improve your hair fall problem. Besides continuing with follihair supplement, you could try using a hair tincture containing ingredients like benzyl nicotinate, Vit K etc(Marketed by the name of Folica medicinal hair tincture). You can initially begin with alternate night application on the scalp skin for a few weeks, followed by twice weekly for maintenance. regards
