Posted on Sat, 14 Jun 2014
Question: hydrogen peroxide in my eye severely red and meaty white part of my eyeball as a result. I have been rinsing but am afraid I didnt rinse enough. I am going to go the ER but can not get a ride for an hour. Can you PLEASE tell me some things that I can possibly do to help myself in the meantime? The Hydrogen Peroxide was 3% household type and this happened at 8am this morning eastern time and it is now 3:40pm eastern time.

Brief Answer:
Do not panic, wash your eye again with water.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Mr. XXXXXXX

Thanks for writing to HCM with your health query.

3% Hydrogen Peroxide is commonly used for disinfecting wounds and cleaning the wounds, 3% is not a very strong concentration and would not cause any major problems generally on the skin, but can sometimes cause irritation of the eyes and discomfort.

Yes, you are right, you should have washed your eyes immediately with normal water/preferably normal saline for at least 15 minutes, you can do that now as well for your satisfaction, but all of it would have either drained away into the nose or in tears.

Please do consult an eye doctor or go to the ER so that you can get some medicines to relieve you of the discomfort.

Till that time, you can apply ice over the eyes to reduce the inflammation, you will feel a whole lot better by this, I would only suggest this as a home remedy till the time you reach the ER.

Hope this information helps you, please feel free to write back if you need further help.

Wishing you speedy recovery.

Warm regards.
