How To Reverse The Toxicity Of Ciprofloxacin?

default
Posted on Fri, 8 Aug 2014
Question: I got Ciprofloxacin to treat a minor ear infection.
Now I have side effects from Cipro since 8 weeks.

My symptoms from the Ciprofloxacin side effects are:
tendonitis/tendinosis, muscle twitching/spasm/pain, neuropathy, tinnitus, headache, etc...
I was a healthy 26 year old athlete before this poison destroyed my body.

What can be done to reverse the damage and to promote cellular healing?

Sincerely, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
can try antioxidants

Detailed Answer:
Hi, ciprofloxacin is commonly drug used drug for many infections. It is unfortunate that you fell prey for the side effects of it. There is no data till date that anything can reverse the toxicity of the drug. However, antioxidants and tendon supporting drugs might help in recovery.
Antioxidants like lycopene, astaxanthene and tendon supportive drugs like collagen supplements.

Did you hear of MitoQ?
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/0000/
Can you give me your opinion on it please?

Also what about high dosage Vitamin C and Magnesium?

Brief Answer:
detailed answer.

Detailed Answer:
hi,
I did hear about Mito Q, and it is one more antioxidant. There is an influx of antioxidants in the market of late, and there are mixed results with these. MitoQ might theoretically help you but its translation to clinical benefit is purely individualised. You may give a try.
I have gone through the link, and thanks for posting.
Tendon injury is more common in athletes and dancers who frequently stretch their achiles tendons, even in them the frequency is less than 1%. Reversal of toxicity varies case by case and can not be extrapolated. however, there is no harm in using antioxidants (vit C and glutathione are also antioxidants).
In my opinion, you may try Glutathione and vitamin C (upto 1 gram). I do not recommend high doses of magnesium, as it is an important ion in cellular function whose balance in the body is extremely important. I do not want to see you end up with magnesium toxicity.
At the same time, you also need an MRI of the worst effected joint to evaluate the extent of injury. Consulting an orthopedician who has expertise in dealing with tendon reconstruction will help you. Avoid unguided physiotherapy.
Lastly, web based opinions are subject dependent and are prone for errors, sometimes life threatening. So, a doctor you trust, who sees you, examines you and who takes your responsibility is the best one to help you.
All the best.

Would Glutathione IVs or Vitamin C be an option?

I'm already taking a lot of magnesium in pico ionic form, transdermal magnesium oil and magnesium citrate.
I still have muscle cramps so I thought that my magnesium must be still low.

What are the signs of getting too much magnesium?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Vaddadi Suresh (3 hours later)
Brief Answer:
Very high doses of magnesium is harmful.

Detailed Answer:
Yes, they are options worth giving a try.
Very high doses of magnesium is harmful.
Unfortunately, hypermagnesemia (too much magnesium) can remain largely asymptomatic. Occasional symptoms include vague discomfort in head and chest, slowed pulse and nausea.
It can result in fatal cardiac rythm disturbances all of a sudden. The only way to know it is to monitor serially serum magnesium concentrations.
Hope i am clear.

Yes very clear.
I took a rbc test for magnesium 2 days ago.
Is this the best test?
What should be the upper limit?

Thank you
doctor
Answered by Dr. Vaddadi Suresh (21 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Best test, yes.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
RBC magnesium estimation is the best test. (we do serum magnesium here in India)
Levels used depend on units used and vary from country to country.
In general, plasma concentration should not exceed 2.5 meq/L where as RBC (intracellular magnesium conc, which is the gold standard) concentration should not exceed 1.8 meq/L.
However, you will see the standard reference values in the report which should be ideal for follow up (as there are lab to lab variations).
Hope this helps you.
