Brief Answer:
The causal virus sits in the area of nerve supply for life

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

Shingles is caused by a type of herpes virus. Once you get an infection, the virus sits in the nerve endings for the rest of life and when due to some reason the immunity gets depressed, the infection flares up. So, the answer is that you cannot really stop it from recurring. But you can definitely try and stay healthy and fit so that your immunity remains fine and a flare up does not occur.

Brief Answer:
You should visit the emergency of a hospital

Detailed Answer:
I understand your situation. But shingles is very painful. Since you mention that its already bad, it is probably in the crusting stage which is the final stage. Application of calamine lotion may have a soothing effect. Still it might be worthwhile to visit the ER and get yourself examined. Based on their evaluation they can perhaps offer something suitable.

Brief Answer:
Herpes and shingles is known to be very painful.

Detailed Answer:
Sorry for not being able to answer back earlier. I understand your dismal situation and I am sure that the doctor at the emergency does not. But as I explained that there is not much to be done. You can take Aleve (naproxen) for relief of the pain and can apply emollients and moisturizers. But that is all that can be done at the moment.
Please be patient. You shall have to wait a bit more to get the relief you seek. Sorry for not being able to give you any easy relief as there is no better medicine available.
