                                    Brief Answer:
hi and welcome
Detailed Answer:
Withdrawal symptoms when stopping lorazepam arent usually significant and Most people don't have any symptoms with it. Of course it depends on how long you 've been taking it. If you were taking same dosage for more than 2 years than withdrawal should be gradual. Take half pill In next 5 days, then take 1 pill every 3 days for 1 week. And then take half pill every 3 days for 2 weeks. This should ensure that withdrawal syndrome won't occur . If your difficulties persist after stopping it,you should ask your Dr for alternative medicine.Wish you good health.regards

I have been taking it for 20 years. Let me get this straight. I should take half a pill for next 5 days...then take 1 pill every 3 days and then half pill every 3 days for 2 weeks...I'm really nervous about his my Dr. told me the other day that long term use of this could cause alzheimers and I'm nervous about side effects from withdrawl.

Detailed Answer:
Well, this is long use of lorazepam and it may have some withdrawal symptoms which could last for 1-2 months after last dose is taken. In case when it is used for more than 10 years, dose should be reduced for 20-25% every 2 weeks. it means that after 1 month you should be taking 0.5mg per day and in 10-15 weeks you should stop it completely. So I suggest to do this: in first week: in first week take 1mg for 6 days and then take 0.5mg for 1 day. In second week take 1mg for 5 days and 0.5mg for 3 days. in third week take 1mg for 4 days and 0.5mg for 3 days and so on. After 6-7 weeks you should be taking 0.5mg per day. After this you should skip 0.5mg dose for ine day each week and after 7 weeks you should finish your witdrawal process. If you feel that you cant continue at any point, you should back to primary dosage and consult your doctor.
There is no enough studies about lorazepam and alzheimer but most of it confirms that lorazepam can aggravate alzheimer symptoms and it will increase risk for alzheimer but just slightly.the main role in alzheimer is still not found and it mostly depends on genetics. So you and your dr should decide cost-benefit of lorazepam. This very low Alzheimer risk should not be the only cause for stopping it.
