Question: I am 57 with bulging disks from L1-L5. If the disks are already weak, is it possible for them to loose fluid from the pressure of using a continuous passive motion machine where you are lying on your stomach and the machine bends you backwards?

Brief Answer:
The answer is most probably no.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for posting your query.

I am Dr Sudhir Kumar, Neurologist, and I would try my best to help you.

I have noted your clinical details. Based on this, you have weak lumbar discs. The risk factors that can make them weaker or make them bulge out are: 1. Lifting heavy weights, 2. Bending forward at waist level while standing.

If a machine bends the back backwards, it would be good for back muscles and would make them stronger. Stronger back muscles could be protective for disc degeneration. Obviously, it would also depend on the range and force of backward movements.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,
