Question : I am feeling that some food stuck on my throat after swallowing. Sometimes I feel light pain while swallow food. I've done a barium meal swallow through xray and all the reports are normal. My doc prescribed me some medicine like nexpro 40, razo 20, but I don't find much improvement. I feel quite fear to go through an endoscopy. Please help me

Brief Answer:
Endoscopy is not only diagnostic but therapeutic also...

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service...
I've gone through your query in details...
I can understand your concern...

Well, your symptoms are possibly due to persistent gastric acid reflux. However, the cause of it's needed to be diagnosed which is why an Upper GI endoscopy is necessary. There are certain cases where it's not only a diagnostic procedure but also therapeutic too...It's good that Barium swallow reports were ok, but that's not conclusive in this case...

There's nothing to worry. The scope is just a small tube-like flexible structure, and you'll be given local anaesthesia also during the procedure. It's a routine OPD based procedure done by the Gastroenterologists which only takes a few minutes. Post-procedure you can go home also.

Please continue the Nexpro as already advised by your doctor. Additionally, you may request him/her to add an additional medicine i.e. Levosulpiride, which would be beneficial for you. It can even be taken as a combination with Nexpro only (eg. Nexpro L)...

Additionally, all the irritants need to be cut down from the diet as a priority, particularly excessive sour/pickle/deep fried foods.

-Please avoid smoking (if at all do) as it can further aggravate these symptoms...

-Drink plenty of water throughout the day, don't let the mouth getting dry...

-Chew the food very well, eat in small portions, but at regular intervals (have 4-5 small meals a day rather than having 2-3 large meals)...never skip breakfast and always have some healthy foods in breakfast (eg. some baked slices of brown/multigrain bread, boiled eggs, oats, yoghurt, muesli etc.)

-Try to have your dinner at least 2-2.5 hours before the bedtime, don't lie down immediately after dinner, take a stroll around, maintain a time gap of around 2hours at least before bedtime.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take Care
Kind Regards
