HSV 1 usually affects oro labial mucosa whereas HSV 2 generally affects genital region but the distinction is not exclusive. There is no way to know whether HSV 1 infection is of oral or genital region except for the appearance of clinical lesions

The virus does not survive for long and dies quickly on drying.So, it would survive only as long as the secretions dries out.
