Question: I am on birth control and I am married. My husband had hernia surgery almost 4 weeks ago. Instead of having a period this month, I have had a brown discharge that has turned into blood, but still having the brown discharge too. Is this cause for any concern and what could this be?

Brief Answer:
Most likely old blood

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Brown discharge, especially around the time of the period, is usually old blood, which turns brown when it stays in the uterus for awhile, which usually happens when there isn't a strong flow yet, such as just before and after your period. It can sometimes also be a sign of infection, but as long as you haven't noticed a change in smell or other symptoms such as pain with urination, I wouldn't be too concerned about it, you can just wait and see if it goes away within a few days of your period ending. If it doesn't, or you do notice other symptoms such as a change in smell, I would see your doctor about it to get tested and treated if an infection is confirmed.

I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any other questions about that, and I would be glad to discuss it with you further.
Thanks.
