Question : I am suffering from extremely muffled hearing in both of my ears. This has been going on now for nearly 4 weeks. This comes on when I first get up in the morning and gets even worse in the evening. Depending on how I move my head the sound seems to change. The odd thing is that when I lay down on my back and go to sleep, it almost completely clears up. If I lay on my side then just one ear becomes clogged. I have been taking Benadryl and Sudafed which has had absolutely no effect. I am now taking Mucinex Sinus which still seems to have no effect.

Brief Answer:
Eustachian tube block

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for posting the query. I have understood your problem, I will try my best to help you.

1. Recurrent clogging in both the ears is due to the block in the Eustachian tube (the tube connecting nose and the ear). The block worsens in the dependent position due to increase in the nasal congestion over the affected side.

2. You need to get the audiological evaluation (such as Pure tone audiometry and Tympanometry) done to identify the actual problem. An x-ray of the paranasal sinuses would be highly beneficial.

3. Nasal decongestants such as Xylometazoline helps in relieving the congestion in the nose and the Eustachian tube as well, followed by steam inhalation. Drink frequent sips of warm water. Avoid coffee and chilled food/beverages.

Hope this answers your query; I would be available for the follow-up queries.
