Question : I am suffering from severe dandruff since last five years. I get dead skin layers and becomes itchy. When I shampoo from market dandruff shampoos, get relief only for a couple of days. I shaved off my head twice but it didn't help. :) I tried consulting a couple of dermatologists, but it didn't help. Now on top of this pain, I started getting hair fall too. Please advice and assist.

Hello,

Dandruff is a common cause of excessive hair shedding. For resistant dandruff I suggest you to use a coal tar and salicylic acid based shampoo e.g Protar shampoo. You may use it either daily or on alternate days. Lather it well on to wet scalp and allow it to act for 7-10minutes before rinsing it off. In addition i suggest you to use a calcipotriol and clobetasol propionate lotion e.g Calpsor- C lotion. Thereafter just continue with the shampoo. These are prescription drugs and I advice you to kindly talk to your local practitioner regarding this.

Is this due to hormonal imbalance? Do I need to take any oral drugs to stabilise it? I had tried these medications but didn't get rid of dandruff completely.

Hi.

Seborrheic dermatitis or dandruff is not due to hormonal imbalance. Oral Isotretinoin 10-20mg per day can be tried and is quite effective for Seborrheic dermatitis.
