Question : I broke my left arm in 2000 and had a metal plate put in. Recently, the arm has started to ache. Is it related to the metal plate?

I read your query and here is my advice.
I think you should get your arm checked by an orthopedist. I don't think that the situation now can be related to the metal plate.
I think the situation now can be related to the complications of the old fracture. If the fracture was near the articulation it may have contributed to osteoarthritis.
I believe you may need to do a x-ray first to check the situation of your arm
