Question : I don’t know if you can help me, no one seems to have an answer. Can an ultrasound show swelling? Can an ultrasound show leakage/seeping from an abscess? I already know I have fluid, that is not what I’m asking. And I am not asking you to interpret what everything means on the ultrasound. I already know that. I want to know if an ultrasound can show an abscess leaking into the abdominal area.

Brief Answer:
High frequency ultrasound can have a solution to your question

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing in to us.

High frequency ultrasound probes can show fluids in tracts of abscess and debris. The accuracy depends on the area of the abdomen and thickness of abdominal wall.

MRI is the best modality for such an evaluation.
