I Felt A Sudden Sharp Pain In My Inside Wrist

default
Posted on Sun, 25 Nov 2018
Question: I felt a sudden sharp pain in my inside wrist and it seemed to be coming from a vein. I massaged the vein and it was hard. It has got better but the skin went red and now I have been left with a bruise across the inside of my wrist and my wrist is a bit sore. The same thing happened about 3 months ago. Should I be seeing a doctor?
Many thanks.

Brief Answer:
Please provide a picture and answers to the questions below

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

Pain in the wrist is common and not always you will need to see a doctor for it. On the other hand it is important for us to know a little more about the pain:

- Where exactly is the pain? Is it at the side like the base of the thumb or on the side of the little finger or in the middle of the wrist on the back side or front side of it (palmar side).
- How long have you had the pain?
- Do you have pain in other areas of your body or other joints?
- Have you had any trauma or repeated movements recently (if you moved house or a lot of hand knitting or a lot or writing or typing)
-Do you have other symptoms like fever, fatigue, weight loss, etc?
- Can you upload a picture of the wrist and the red area, it would be very helpful to understand what is going on.

Local redness on the wrist can be from the massage on it but can also be due to tendinitis or more rare even infection. It is important for us to know the answers of these answers and to have a picture to better make the difference.

I am waiting to hear from you with the answers to the above questions.

I’m not sure whether my reply sent or not so here it is again:

I’ve uploaded a photo of the red/bruised area on my wrist. You’ll see it is on the palm side of my left hand in the middle, and it runs up into my hand.

I am otherwise well but a little stressed.

I was decorating shortly beforehand but I was not in pain and it wasn’t uncomfortable. When the pain in my vein/wrist started I wasn’t using my hand.

This has happened once before about 2-3 months ago.

Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Detailed answer and explanations are given below

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for uploading the picture and for giving more information.

The redness does not seem to be due to an infection at the moment (it is not that intense and swollen as it would be with infection). If the swollen vein has been there for less then a few days i would recommend you to just keep the area cool (cold compresses but not direct ice on skin), keep it elevated whenever possible and take some ibuprofen to relieve discomfort (if you have no problem with the stomach and are not using blood pressure medicines).

If the pain is there for longer than a week or it is not better in a few days or there is any worsening of pain or redness or swelling you will need to see a doctor.
Very likely in your case the vein may have had some local trauma and that is why it is red and bruised. Sometimes blockage and clot formation can happen in veins but is not common in upper extremity veins. Still if no improvement or any worsening you will need to see your doctor as it might happen in very rare cases that veins get clots in upper extremities as well.

I hope this answers to your question but please feel free to reply in case more clarification is needed on this.

Take care
