Question : I get severe headaches, daily, from the moment I wake up till when I fall asleep. My headaches are concentrated on the right side of my face, temple area. When I touch my face and head it is sensitive to touch in my temple and above my ear. I first noticed the sensitivity 2 years ago when I was getting my hair washed at the salon. However the sensitivity on the side of my head has gotten much worse and more frequent. When I blink, my right eye sends pain into my temple on the right side. When I move my eyebrows, I don’t feel the same pain. Sometimes my nose is stuffy on that side, my neck right now is very sore, and my right eye will feel sluggish. I have been seen for migraines and I get auras without and with headache. Because if this I have sumatriptan tablets but when I took the tablet I felt like my head was a tight ball of yarn and made things worse. I’m going to see an acupuncture specialist, not really sure what else’s to do. Looking for advice/confirmation on what I should do.

As per your history, it may be due to trigeminal neuralgia as you have headache with increased sensitivity over face and head.

For further assessment, I would suggest you to consult with neurophysician for detailed examination. He may procure MRI brain with neck, nerve conduction studies to rule out any other possibilities of occipital neuralgia/nerve compression at cervical region.

Further treatment mainly depends upon the underlying condition. Till then continue pain medication. Do steam inhalation for stuffy nose. You can use nasal saline drops locally.

Doctor, thank you for your consultation. I intend to get a referral to see a neurophysician, however whay types of pain medience should I be taking in the mean time? I do not feel ibprophen works, curious if I am doing any good taking any pain medication. Also, do you think accupuncture is also a good remedy while I wait for my appointment?

I would suggest you to continue tablet Ibuprofen 400 mg every 6 hourly and consult with Neurophysician as soon as. There is no harm in continuing pain medication for short periods.

Frankly speaking, as I am a allopathic doctor I don't have detailed knowledge about acupuncture.
