Question : Hi,
Back in July of 2019 I had a cervical fusion surgery on C5, C6, and C7. There were bulging discs there. They put in a plate and screws. Last summer after a day that I worked out I had some pain in my neck. I called back the neurosurgeon's office and the PA told me to take a week off lifting weights and take some motrin. Also that summer I swung a baseball bat at about 25 pitches in which I was twisting at the torso and was aching in my neck again. After that happened the PA had me get an X-ray and said my hardware looked just fine. I am an active person and am wondering if it is just pain from exercise and swelling possibly or could it be that the discs in the neck above and below where my surgery was could be effected already? If so, I do not want to aggravate those discs and potentially need another surgery so soon. I am going to attach a picture of an exercise I like to do. And wonder if I should refrain from using this piece of equipment or not?
Thank you,
XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
That equipment may damage an operated cervical spine.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
The equipment that you are using actually can put at strain the discs of the levels below and above the fusion.
Since you had cervical spine related symptoms, I think that you should slow down with the use of that equipment.
Besides the x-rays, an MRI of your cervical spine is necessary to evaluate correctly the current condition of your cervical spine.
Neck stretching exercises may help to prevent further damage.
Discuss with your Doctor these issues.
