I Had A Plain Ct Scan Of My Neck Because

Posted on Wed, 22 Apr 2015
Question: I had a plain ct scan of my neck because my lymph nodes have been swelling for over a month. I was told that everything was fine. Then I had an ultrasound done on Tuesday, because on Sunday night the lymph node behind my right ear swelled up and was painful. This happened under my chin with pain & then the pain only went away & then a week later behind my left ear & the pain only went away, and now it's my right ear & the pain is finally gone. I also have a sebaceous cyst on my right collarbone that started small a few years ago. In the ultrasound the cyst had all sorts of bright colors. There were a few other places that had all different colors too. All they told me on the ultrasound was I had swollen lymph nodes, and they said there are three lesions. They want to send me to an ent or oncologist, but an ent isn't on my plan, so they are sending me to an oncologist. The only other symptoms I have is fatigue. I'm so tired all the time. I was positive for the Bart Analysis (BRCA gene) and elected to have a mastectomy & hysterectomy a little over a year ago, so hot flashes and night sweats I think are normal for me. Any idea of what is going on with the lymph nodes/cyst/lesions?

I have the images too. I could send to you. I think I should have the report from the ultrasound tomorrow. The imaging center will email it to me once the radiologist has signed off on it.

Brief Answer:
Seems to be ent infection- ent examination

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

I had gone through your question and understand your concerns that you are having lymph node enlargement.

Answers and suggestions for your queries.

1. Painful lymph nodes in neck always suggests infection from ear, nose and throat infections. Associated with fatigue suggests nutritional deficiencies or lymphoma.

2. Periodic infection of sebaceous cyst also causes lymph node enlargement, mastectomy with removal of lymph nodes or trauma to lymph nodes also causes lymph edema followed by lymph node enlargement.

In my opinion, you need to first consult ent surgeon for detailed ent examination, laryngoscopy (lesions of throat can also cause lymph node enlargement), complete blood picture with esr (tuberculosis), fine needle aspiration cytology (lymphoma, tuberculosis), if necessary x- ray chest. depending on the examination findings, treatment can be started.

Chronic sebaceous cyst need to be removed surgically.

Thank you so much. Yes, it is very insightful, but i cannot see an ent because there isnt one on my plan. What do you think these ultrasound pictures suggest?

Brief Answer:
report suggests benign enlargement of lymph nodes

Detailed Answer:

Hello again,

Thanks for considering my answer and for your follow up.

Your ultrasound report suggests benign enlargement of lymph nodes. Kindly go ahead for the investigations, what I have already mentioned to rule out the cause. It needs fine needle aspiration cytology.

Hope, I have answered your query.

Take care.
