Question: I have a bipap machine that I use every night. When I wake up in the morning my lips are stuck together and my saliva is white and foamy. All-day long I can suck this stuff down, or cough it up. I went without my cpap for 2 nights and my lips did not stick together, but I still had that white stuff. I went to a Dr and she gave me an antibiotic. That did nothing, so I went to a throat specialist and he did a scope of my sinis and said everything was ok. I feel very strongley it is connected to my bipap. I have a soclean machine to make sure everything is cleaned. would a bipap with a humidifer work?

Brief Answer:
Hii. Welcome to the healthcare services. It's due to bipap.

Detailed Answer:
Hii. Welcome to the healthcare services. It's due to bipap. Due to continued air way pressure by the bipap machine the lips are getting dry and swollen. Tongue is getting coated and saliva is white and foamy and thick due to the dried up inspissated secretions. So you should need to use a humidifier. It will help to humidify the upper and lower air way and will prevent crusting of secretions. Use some tablet bromhexine also to liquify the secretions. Can you tell me for what reason you are taking bipap? Drink more water frequently. You can use some steam inhalation to keep the upper air way moist. You can also take saline nasal spray solspre to keep the nasal mucosa moist which will help in proper ventilation along the nasal mucosa. If you are having coated white tongue then do a betadine gargle to prevent any infection. Clean your bipap mask as advised to get rid of any bacterial infection. Hope the above advice will fulfill your queries. Kindly review if you have any more queries.

there is a humidifier built into the machine. I have experimented having more moisture and then less. I drink plenty of water and still I get this white sticky phlegm . I never get rid of it. through the day I always can suck it down of cough it up. I went on the internet and goggled white sticky phlegm with bipap machine and there are many that have the same problem with no answers. I have severe sleep apnea, so I need it for that. My noes is not stuffed up so I don't need a nasal spray. My question is what causes this white sticky phlegm??

Brief Answer:
dried up secretions in the upper respiratory tract

Detailed Answer:
Hii.

This white phlegm can be due to dried up secretions in the upper respiratory tract due to air pressure in the BIPAP mask. As you are having obstructive sleep apnea, you can't breathe properly. So you breathe on opening the mouth and all the secretions in the oral cavity and oropharynx are getting accumulated and can result in white phlegm. If you can do exercise and weight reduction, it will be better. Take steam inhalation as it will help in reducing the phlegm. You can use some mucolytic drug like bromhexine tablet. Do proper oral cavity cleaning with the help of chlorhexidine gargle.

in my first letter to you about the first sentence I said my lips are stuck together. There is no way I would be breathing through my mouth as you suggested. I don't really want to take something to cover up the problem, let's find out the problem. This shouldn't happen to begin with.

Brief Answer:
Hii. You are obstructive sleep apnoea. For that reason only you are taking

Detailed Answer:
Hii. You are obstructive sleep apnoea. For that reason only you are taking Bipap. Mouth breathing is a primary sign while the person is sleeping. When you sleep, you are unable to take proper breath ; in that case you are sure to have mouth breathing while you are sleeping. This is the reason why the lips get stuck easily due to inspissated secretions and dried up mucus. Your obstructive sleep apnoea is the problem. Bipap is a mode of treatment but it has the above side effects. So take steam inhalation through mouth and nose. Do proper warm saline gargle. Drink more water.
