Question : I have an abscess tooth that is not hurting right now but is causing swelling the gum at the site. I have been taking Amoxicillin for a few days but the swelling doesn't seem to fully going away. Am I in danger of becoming septic or risking bone or brain infection ?

Hello First of all thank you for approaching us for your query. I read through your query. I must say that take antibiotic (amox n clav combination) and do the hot salt water gargle for 5 days then you have to either get the tooth extracted or do root canal treatment followed by crown(if it is possible).You wont have pain as the tooth pulp might be dead but it can cause abscess so treat the cause. Please dont keep in mind about brain damage and all if you follow these steps.Sepsis is the last step of all these if you dont get it treated in soo long. Please stay calm. And please dont eat sweets or extremes of temperatures(too hot and too cold) with that side until you get it treated. Hope you understood what i meant.Have a healthy day. Thank you

Should I use a cold compress to reduce swelling ?

Dont do cold compress.It will reduce the blood supply(vasoconstriction). We want more blood to reach there so that our antibiotics will reach there and act against abscess. Thats why I suggested you to do hot salt water gargle concentrating in that area so that it causes more blood supply.
