Question: I have been a heart patient since 2001. I have also been unsteady on my feet. I fell, hit my shin, last Tuesday. As a result, I still have a large hump (blood ?) on my shin, and swelling and bruising to my inner ankle. I am on plavix, is this causing the bruising and pain all up my leg?

Brief Answer:
plavix causes such bruising after injuries

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

welcome to 'Ask a Doctor' service. I've gone though your query and I have to ascertain that plavix indeed causes more bruising after being injured. Plavix delays the formation of blood clots. After an injury that has caused bleeding - even if it's minor only - the bleeding may be protracted and result in significant blood loss or hematoma.

If you're having numbness or other sensory dysfunction or the swelling is so severe that it causes the skin to be very tight above the injured area then a doctor should assess the injury as soon as possible. If it even happens again in the future make sure you apply ice-packs and elevate the injured part for the first 2-3 days.

I hope I've answered your question. Please get back to me if you need further assistance.

Kind Regards!
