Question : I have been diagnosed with schizo-affective disorder. I am most troubled by unwanted thoughts. Navane controls these thoughts well. I took Navane for about 25 years. Now, over the last years my psychiatrist took me off Navane. He has tried many newer anti-psychotics and none control these thoughts. What medication would be most likely to clear unwanted thoughts ?

Hello dear and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Navane has many side effects. One of the common side effects if the medication is used for a long time is tardive dyskinezia.

So,it is not recommended to recommend this medication for a very long time.

There are several types of alternative medicine with similar effects and less side effects.

I would recommend Seroquel, which is very prescribed in my daily practice.

You can begin the medication with 50 mg per day and gradually increase the dose up to 500 mg per day.

I also suggest you to consult your doctor about this medication because is prescribed.
