I Have Been On Birth Control For Over A Decade

default
Posted on Fri, 12 Feb 2021
Question: I have been on birth control for over a decade and on Junel 1.5 for 8 years. I take continuous to skip periods. I started bleeding on Dec 1, 2020. I have had two ultrasounds, one cervical biopsy and one hysteroscopy. the hysteroscopy, 16 days ago, found a fibroid which was shaved off. I have continued to bleed since Dec 1 (almost two months). I am frustrated that I haven't stopped bleeding yet. should I stop birth control? should I try a different birth control? do I need an ablation?

Brief Answer:
menorrhagia

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the query,
Considering the fact that you have undergone a hysteroscopic myomectomy , few days back , it is natural to experience some bleeding for 10-15 days ranging from spotting to dark clotted blood to fresh red colour off and on , depending on the amount of sub-mucousal fibroid which was being shaved off.
The bleeding can be controlled by either anti-fibrinolytics or placing you on progesterone only pills for next 15 days. It would be advisable to sop the birth control pill now and switch to progesterone pills which would help control bleed.
Avoid intercourse or practice barrier contraception for next 3 weeks. Antifibrinolytics like tranexamic acid 500mg tabs thrice ad day for next 5 days would help control bleed.
Endometrial ablation is not an option for submucousal fibroid. The present raw area which was shaved off needs to be endometrialised before bleeding can stop , hence progesterone support would be necessary.
SO, STOP JUNEL.
You can discuss your option as suggested, with your gynaecologist and take an informed decision.
