I Have Been Taking 2 Mesalamine For UC For A

Posted on Tue, 16 Feb 2021
Question: I have been taking 2 mesalamine for UC for a few months with no blood or pain for about 3 months. After eating fairly bad over the past weekend, blood returned. I went up to 3 tablets of mesalamine initially and went to 4 today. Frequency has gone down to 1x a day with pain just 1-2x a day. But there is still blood.

Is blood usually the last symptom to go away?

How long does it typically take 4 mesalamine to have an affect if I was one 2 mesalamine tablets for 3 months and 3 tablets for the last week?

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for choosing "Ask a Doctor" service for your query,
Have seen your details and I appreciate your concerns,
Yes as the name suggests it's ulcerative colitis and ulcers are the source of bleeding and blood will stop only when ulcers are healed up completely.
Therefore bleeding is usually in 99% cases the last symptom to go.
It would take around 2-3 weeks for the bleeding to completely stop and ulcers to heal up.
Hope I was helpful.
