Question : I have had a biopsy of an oropharyngeal small mass which said it was a polyploid squamous epithelium with koilocytotic changes, consistent with squamous papilloma with viral changes. Does this mean I have definitely had hpv and does it mean I will get cancer?

                                    Brief Answer:
Koilocytotic changes are commonly related to HPV virus, they are benign.
Detailed Answer:
Hello dear and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Koilocytes are a type of epithelial cell that develops following a human papillomavirus infection.
This means that you had an HPV infection before.
Squamous papilloma is considered benign.
It doesn’t necessarily mean you have cervical cancer or are going to get it.
There are several treatments that can be suggested in this case.
I would recommend an electrosurgical excision and a biopsy to confirm the benign nature of the mass.
Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.

Is there a charge for the follow up? Iam confuses. You talked about having cervical cancer, This was not on my cervix, it was in my mouth. Does your recommend answer change? If there is a fee, I cannot afford it, I thought there were 3 follow up questions. Please clarify

                                    Brief Answer:
The answer is the same for oropharyngeal koilocytotic changes.
Detailed Answer:
Hi again dear,
You have the right of three follow ups.
I accidentally have written cervical, but the logic is the same.
Koilocytotic changes are commonly related to the HPV virus.
The treatment is the same, it consists in excision and a biopsy to confirm the nature the mass.
I suggest to consult an ENT specialist for further evaluation.
Feel free to contact me again for further clarification.
Take care dear,
